To tell you the truth, I don’t know what to make of Luís Antero‘s Radio Yuri (Impulsive Habit), it is everything a field recording should be as well as everything a field recording shouldn’t be. Let me start at the beginning. Impulsive Habit is a microlabel of one of my favorite labels, test tube. I always thought it to be a “field recording” netlabel, but it is more than that. From their website the write that they are focusing “on field recording-based works. We are also very interested on new artists, new approaches . . .” New approaches, that they are.
Radio Yuri is obviously composed (and the liner notes announce that fact), but the sounds are all field recordings. Luís Antero has put these together, not as a kid would build a collage, but as an artist with themes and continuity running through the work. I can see why the curators at Impulsive Habit chose to release Radio Yuri, it’s good, it’s not ordinary. You must check out his website for other incredible work.
