I am the Sgt. Schultz of the techno blogging world, “I know noTHING!” With IDM, ambient and experimental electronic music, I’ve listened to enough that I know what’s good and what’s boring, what’s great and what’s cliche. But with techno, not so much. But like any good blogger that won’t stop my from writing about techno. Bran Lanen‘s Extinction of Exceptions (zimmer-records) was just released and, as the kids would say, “It has a good beat and you can dance to it.” LOL, I kill me. On a more serious note, the way I listen to techno or house or any other dance music, is I listen to what’s going on beyond the beat — the melody, the noises, the other sounds — on Extinction of Exceptions has this is spades. Now, I don’t know if this is “right”, but for me, the question is, “If you strip away the beats, would the remaining music still be interesting?” Based on the criteria I listed above, I found that Extinction of Exceptions is lots of fun and never boring.
